Literacy Write for Us
Literacy Write for Us – Literacy is the ability to read, write, speak, and listen in a way that allows us to communicate effectively and understand the world. Literacy is defined as an individual’s proficiency in knowledge in a particular area. There are three literacy skills under the 21st-century skills framework: information, media, and technology. With the advancement of technology, it is more important than ever that our children learn in these areas. In the world of constant fake news, our children must be able to judge what information is accurate. Here is a breakdown of the three reading and writing skills and what each means.
The Importance Of Literacy
A lack of vital literacy skills sets a person back at every stage. As a child, they will not be able to succeed in school; as young adults, they will be excluded from the labor market; and as a parent, they will not be able to support their children’s learning. This intergenerational cycle makes social mobility and a fairer society more difficult.
People with low literacy skills may be unable to read a book or newspaper, understand road signs or price posters, understand a bus or train timetable, fill out a form, read medication directions, or use the Internet.
Low literacy levels undermine the UK’s economic competitiveness, costing taxpayers £2.5 billion annually (KPMG, 2009). A third of companies are not satisfied with young people’s literacy skills when they enter the workforce, and a similar number have organized remedial training for young recruits to improve their basic skills, including literacy and communication.
What Are The Three Reading And Writing Skills, And Why Are They So Crucial For Children?
21st-century skills and reading and writing skills
If you have read our previous blogs on 21st-century skills, you will know how important they are if we want our children to succeed in the future. If this is your first time reading our blog, you may not be aware of the 12 Essential 21st-Century Skills, so here is a brief overview.
21st Century Skills is a list of 12 skills and attributes considered essential to success in the world of work. You can read about it in more detail on our blog here. The 12 skills are divided into three categories: learning, reading, writing, and life skills. We previously posted a blog about applying learning skills in the classroom, which you can find here. At Zeeko, all of our initiatives focus on teaching vital 21st-century skills.
The Importance Of Children Learning These Skills
Literacy plays a huge role in the all-round development of our children. It is the basis of their understanding of the world. If we teach literacy skills, we plant the seed for them to be more in tune with life. This applies to both the natural world and the online world. Learning to ask questions and developing their willingness to challenge and question various publications is a huge advantage.
Helping children develop this ability will benefit them in school regarding problem-solving and decision-making. This will aid them in developing more independence which will only add to their abilities in working life at a later stage.
How Can We Teach Reading And Writing Skills At Home?
Parents can teach reading and writing at home in many ways. We understand parents lead busy lives, so we have listed some methods below that can be easily implemented daily.
Run Extended Responsive Conversations:
Asking children how their day went and encouraging them to take control of the conversation is a great way to promote literacy. Use quick questions like, “How did that make you feel?” or “If I were in this situation again, is there anything you would do differently?” Great ways to get them to think and elaborate on different scenarios, solve problems, and consider other possible outcomes of everyday conversations or encounters.
